Joan also recalls her career looking after hundreds of workers at Hatfield Colliery in an article headlined “Pit’s sister of mercy who cared for boys from the black stuff” in The Doncaster Star and The South Yorkshire Times. The feature was written by journalist and ghost-writer Veronica Clark.
