The East Anglia Daily Times Suffolk writes about Saskia Sarginson using the county as a backdrop to Without You…

…“I always wanted to write about Orford Ness,” Saskia says. “It’s such an amazing, magical, extraordinary place. It’s so barren, but beautiful. It feels like an island when you are on it even though it isn’t.”

In the article, Catherine Larner highlights that Without You has “central female characters battling with a difficult personal situation…tells of a family coping with the loss of their daughter, presumed dead…The novel is very evocative of the landscape, the weather and the distinctive buildings.

“…so why did Saskia give the town another name?”

Saskia replies, “I wanted to invent elements. For example, I found that it was more dramatic that the island was in the sea and the river. So I have created something from Orford.”

Using this backdrop also presents a great excuse to visit her family connections:

“I feel very much at home here,” says Saskia whose first book, The Twins, published last year, was based around her memories as a family in Suffolk. “Suffolk is a very particular kind of countryside and is rich in myth and story. It gets inside you and is something I carry around with me.”
