Steven grew up in Poole, Dorset, and studied at the universities of Reading and London. His PhD, from Queen Mary, considered the influence of mysticism and egoism on the work of modernist writers including T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. His academic writing has appeared in Modernism/modernity and Modernist Women Writers and Spirituality. Fishfolk is his first work of fiction. He currently teaches in London, and lives back by the sea in Ramsgate, Kent, with his wife, child and cantankerous cat.
