When a princess casts a shadow over her palace garden, the birds who live there try to help her find happiness again. The peacock dazzles her with the beauty of his feathers. The magpie tempts her with jewels The nuthatch and the starling give her a banquet of nuts and blackberries. But even the seagull who brings the smell of ice cream and sandcastles on his wings fails to make the Princess smile. When an ordinary little wren offers to sing her a story full of happy words, the other birds mock. But the warmth of his words mends the Princess’s heart. Sun shines on the garden again as the Princess and the Wren become friends forever.

In the palace garden there lived a bird who loved words. He loved them more than most birds loved worms. A worm was gone in two beakfuls, but a word could bring pleasure over and over again. The little bird caught words as they blew on the breeze. They were treasures he took back to his nest. The words shone like jewels and made the little bird feel rich.
