Sarah Ockwell-Smith, the parenting expert and author of How to Raise a Teen, Because I Said So and How to Be a Calm Parent, has been interviewed by The Independent for a piece on the TV show Supernanny turning 20 and whether the naughty step is out of date.
In the article, which you can read in full here, Sarah advocates gentle parenting and argues against the naughty step; she says:
“The naughty step expects a child to sit and think about what they’ve done wrong, how they’ve made another individual feel and what they can do better next time. In reality, this type of hypothetical and abstract thinking is not well developed until a child approaches their pre-teens.”
How to Raise a Teen is out now. Grab it here or, better, via your local bookshop or Bookshop.org.
